On the US Coast Guard Cutter Taney... This winter, two volunteers from the Coast Guard Cutter NORTHLAND have been helping out on board TANEY. Their ship is currently undergoing maintenance and repair at the Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay so they have been spending some of their free time here. Steve Flemming has been working in the emergency Diesel generator room. Plans are to restore the Emergency Diesel generator to working condition for future use. His shipmate Aaron Presson has been painting the boiler room passage. After repairing some of the torn insulation on the bulkheads and stripping years of wax off the deck that had turned the deck from bright red to brown, a fresh coat of paint has made this compartment seem brand new. These volunteers are also looking into having their ship donate some now obsolete equipment to the museum for display purposes.

Meanwhile, on the US Submarine Torsk... the volunteers have been hard at work on several projects. The restoration of the Christmas Tree is almost complete. This piece of equipment which indicates whether hull openings are open or closed throughout the boat had been stripped of its contents and converted so one light inside would make everything light up. The Torsk volunteers have painstakingly rebuilt the insides so that it is now functional. Besides restoring the insides of the Christmas tree itself, the volunteers had to fix many of the actual indictors attached to hull openings throughout the boat. With the installation of a Plexiglas cover over the IC switchboard in the Control Room, the Christmas tree is now operational and lit for all to see. Also, in the Control Room, volunteer Frank Morgan has been working to restore damaged and/or missing fancy rope work on the legs of the chart table, diving plane control wheels and handrails to the Conning Tower ladder. Projects for the Spring will include restoration of the bridge (outside) and restoration of the Aft Head in the After Torpedo Room.
