...Now, will YOU be there for the Taney?
US Coast Guard Cutter Taney was commissioned in 1936. This 327-foot, high endurance cutter is one of seven secretary class ships built. Taney has given a half century of wide ranging continuous service with the distinction of being the only warship still afloat that saw action during the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Taney was decommissioned in 1986 and is now part of the Baltimore Maritime Museum.
Preserving a National Historic Landmark
The challenges of preserving USCGC Taney are tremendous. Unlike other museum collections which can be placed in special climate-controlled environments, Taney and other Baltimore Maritime Museum sites are constantly exposed to the stresses of an actual marine environment. Corporate and individual donations and memberships help support vital ongoing preservation projects.
Preservation Projects
Taney is in need of the periodic hull maintenance that, while in service, she received every 2-3 years. As a steel structure afloat in brackish water, the ship's hull is continually exposed to oxidation and galvanic corrosion. Over time, this corrosion weakens the protective coatings along with the underlying steel leading to serious pitting and actual hull breeches.
Following the appearance of several pencil-sized hull breeches just below the waterline in 1999, a professional hull survey of the ship was undertaken by the museum. This survey determined that Taney is in need of major hull maintenance to replace badly corroded steel below the waterline, and renew the sacrificial zinc anodes which have worn away over the years. This major maintenance can only be done in a shipyard drydock - an extremely costly prospect at best! Taney has not been drydocked since the early 1980's.
Other preservation projects include rust treatment and painting on the superstructure and masts, interior painting throughout, deck restoration, and providing archival protection for donated artifacts.
Help us preserve the ship and the memory of those who served.
